An Invitation from Hadassah International29 August 2007

Hadassa International will be holding its fundraising oration, to be addressed by Professor Elliot Berry of the Hebrew University, in Bialik’s Victor Smorgon Hall on Sunday 2 September 2007. Professor Berry will focus on his area of specialisation, obesity and nutrition A special invitation has been extended to members of the Bialik community to come to the school and attend the evening function, which commences at 7.30 p.m. For tickets, call 9500-2681.

Tikun Olam - tying knots for Darfur29 August 2007

Over the last month, Bialik College primary students have been knotting knots to raise money and awareness for the genocide happening in Darfur. This week the Tikun Olam Committee will conduct programs and assemblies for the whole school, teaching about and discussing our connection to the Darfur crisis, as Jews and as human beings.

OneDay fashion show - this Thursday night27 August 2007

Tali, Year 10, has organised a fashion show as a OneDay event to raise money to build schools in East Timor. OneDay is a project of the Oaktree Foundation (a youth organisation that aims at eradicating poverty through education) where anybody can hold their own events and all the profit goes to the Oaktree Foundation.

No doubt you are aware that there are a number of students with special needs in our Jewish day schools requiring extra support from teacher assistants. Government funding to support inclusive education in the private sector is minimal and we are therefore extremely grateful to the Jewish Day Schools Integration Program which provides extra funds to ensure all children get a fair go.

Bialik Students triumphant at the Manningham Speech and Drama Eisteddfod23 August 2007

Further to Harrison's (2G) win for recitation at the eisteddfod, Yuval in Year 5 (and her partner) came first in the impromptu section, with a humorous piece. The girls were given a topic in which they had one minute to plan and two minutes to perform. Ellie ,also in Year 5, came third in the twelve years and under recitation section with the poem ‘My Doggy Ate My Homework’ by Eric Ode. The students followed a rigorous training program developed by the Dramalicious team, who run the after-school Drama program at Bialik.

Citation of Bravery for our Shaliah23 August 2007

One-hundred and forty-two soldiers who fought in the Second Lebanon War were chosen by an IDF committee to receive medals of valour and citations of excellence for the courage they displayed during Israel's war against Hizbullah last summer. One of these brave soldiers is our shaliah, Steven Friedland. Steven received his citation for treating wounded soldiers whilst under constant fire.

Hip Hop Dance Champions23 August 2007

Amy from Grade 6C and Samantha from Grade 4 are part of a dance group called the Splitz. After winning the gold medal at the Victorian School Aerobics and Dance (primary) competition earlier this year they had the opportunity to represent Victoria in the national competition. On the weekend, they competed in the National School Aerobics and Dance (primary) competition in Sydney in the Funk/Hip Hop section and won the gold medal.

ELC's Explore Committee22 August 2007

Tournament of Minds - congratulations to Bialik's teams22 August 2007

On Sunday 19 August, four primary teams from Bialik competed in the Tournament of Minds competition at Swinburne University in Hawthorn.

After weeks of hoeing, fertilising, planting, watering, weeding and general tendering the students in the garden club were finally able to reap the benefits of all their hard labour.

Jewish Interschool Snow Sports Championships 200715 August 2007

On Tuesday 7 August 2007,30 Bialik students represented the College at Mt Buller in the ABL Australian Jewish Interschool Snow Sports Championships. The competitors were from 7 Jewish day schools from both NSW and Victoria. Most Bialik competitors participated in race training run by the Mt Buller Race Department the day before the competition and on race day competed with great enthusiasm and skill.Each competitor should be proud of his or her achievement.

Mt Hotham Ski Trip 200715 August 2007

On Sunday 29 July, at 6am, 30 Bialik students ranging from years 7-10 and 6 staff members were assembling in the dark at the Cato street entrance. All were sleepy yet very excited, anticipating a great week of skiing and snowboarding at the snow covered Mt Hotham.

VCE Hebrew Seminar in Monbulk15 August 2007

Last week, the annual VCE Hebrew seminar was held in Monbulk. We accomplished our aims of the seminar, which were to enable the students to immerse themselves in the Hebrew language and to enrich their Hebrew curriculum through conversation, discussions, songs, movies, interactive activities, cooking, reading and writing from dawn until dusk.

Who ever said that sunflowers only bloom in Summer?15 August 2007

Witnessing what has happened in the garden club over the winter months we have to shelve the myth that sunflowers are only a summer flower. The unusually warm build up to winter this year has fooled our sunflowers into blossoming now. If you need a bit of cheering up, come to the garden club and have a look for yourself, our sunflowers are bound to brighten up anyone’s day.

Soup Kitchen12 August 2007

As part of the Tikkun Olam program, a group of students from Years 11 and12 organised an excursion for volunteers from Year 9 to help at a soup kitchen for the homeless. They did this because they believe this will provide the students with a hands-on opportunity to help make a difference for some of the less-fortunate of the community.

Mobile Phones - a child safety checklist3 August 2007

The internet can now be accessed on most mobile phones, bringing not only a world of incredible opportunities in terms of communication, interaction and entertainment to ourselves and our children but also a range of potential risks including accessing adult content via inappropriate sites and 'stranger danger' contact in chat services. The Australian Government has issued a mobile phone child safty checklist parents are encouraged to review and advice for kids of all ages.

Bialik College donates IT and other equipment to schools1 August 2007

Bialik College periodically upgrades its computer and related IT equipment to ensure that our staff and students have the opportunity to work with the highest quality technologies we can afford. Recognising that we are relatively privileged at Bialik to be able to do so, and mindful of our responsibility to both the community in which we live and to the environment, the College proudly donates its superseded but useable equipment to schools and organisations which really need them.
