As part of the VCE Unit 4 Biology course, the students attended a half day program at the University of Melbourne on Monday 23 July.
They began the day with a one-and-a-half hour workshop, during which students explored a range of perspectives on gene technology. The workshop enabled the students to develop an understanding of the inter-relationships between biological, cultural and technological evolution.
A two hour practical activity followed the workshop, allowing the students to analyse evidence for evolutionary change and the effect on population structure and to use tools and techniques to manipulate DNA in order to demonstrate the evolution of antibiotic resistance.
The students enjoyed the practical, hands-on nature of the excursion.
