Year 9 Aurecon Bridge Building Challenge (STEM)

The Rosenkranz Centre for Excellence and Acheivement

This week Jake A, Dustin F and Josh K represented Bialik at The Aurecon Bridge Building competition hosted at Mount St. Joseph Girls’ College in Altona.  The competition required the students to construct a bridge from a kit of materials provided by the competition organisers.  This term our team of 3 researched different types of bridges, sought advice from mentors around our school and designed their bridge digitally using SketchUp Make.  When the kit arrived our students had several weeks to build the bridge according to specific instructions and dimensions, that could carry a large weight ready for competition day on 18 September.

Competition day was a buzz with 42 schools in attendance.  Within the competition hall our students met with judges from Aurecon, Vic Roads, Metro Tunnel and Auto Cad.  They explained their design and had their bridge tested to ‘breaking point’.

We are very proud of our students and the work they put into this competition.  Their bridge withstood up to 20.3 kgs, a 6 fold improvement from last year, winning Bialik the Most Improved Award.  Bialik also finished second in the digital design component.

We look forward to entering again in 2020 to build on our performance.
