On Thursday May 10, the Year 5 Manhigut (Leaders) had a fascinating session about brain plasticity with neuroscientist Dr Jared Cooney Horvath. Jared explained to the cohort thatNeuroplasticity, or brain plasticity, refers to the brain’s ability to change throughout a person’s life. He told the students about the human brain’s amazing ability to re-organise itself by forming new connections between brain cells. To demonstrate this, Jared gave the students a fun task. In groups of three, they took turns catching a falling ruler and recording their reaction time. The more practise students had, the quicker their reaction time! The level of focus and speed increased as the students ‘trained’ their brains. It was a thoroughly enlightening and enjoyable session.
Jared Cooney Horvath (PhD, MEd) is an expert in the field of Educational Neuroscience with a focus on translating neuroscientific principles to enhance teaching and learning practices within the classroom. Jared has conducted research and lectured at Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, the University of Southern California, and the University of Melbourne and has taught at schools around the United States and Australia.
