Last week, eight students from Years 9 and 10 participated in a full day event, specifically targeted at girls, entitled, “The Power of Engineering.” The event was hosted by Swinburne University and the aim of the day was to expose female students to the world of engineering.
The Bialik students participated in a variety of interactive workshops hosted by graduates of Telstra and Engineers Without Borders. In an effort to provide the students with real life experiences, they were exposed to the different fields of work within Engineering as well as local projects. This extended to visiting the Yarra Junction Tunnel construction, in Yarraville, where they heard from women involved in the project talk about the challenges and work, as well as what it felt like to be a part of a large project that will change the way Melbourne operates.
Our students were able to ask questions of these engineers and learnt first-hand about how the engineering industry has changed, and the ongoing and growing potential for future opportunities for women in engineering.
