In 2025, Bialik College will proudly celebrate two decades of commitment to cultivating a culture of learning, thinking, and understanding through our Cultures of Thinking initiative.
A Groundbreaking Collaboration with Harvard
The journey began in 2005 when Bialik College partnered with Harvard's Graduate School of Education Project Zero team to launch the Cultures of Thinking research project. Led by Dr. Ron Ritchhart and supported by Prof. David Perkins, Mark Church, and Karin Morrison, this five-year project was generously funded by Abe and Vera Dorevitch.
Exploring Thinking Routines and Cultural Forces
Initially, the project focused on Thinking Routines, which provide structured methods to guide and deepen classroom thinking. Over time, it expanded to include seven additional Cultural Forces that shape thinking: Environment, Expectations, Interactions, Language, Modelling, Opportunities, and Time.
A School-Wide Culture of Thinking
The overarching goal was to build a school-wide culture that fosters deep thinking and encourages both students and teachers to develop lasting thinking dispositions.
Research That Made a Difference
The outcomes of this project were so impactful that the book Making Thinking Visible was written, drawing on five years of research conducted at Bialik College in collaboration with Harvard's Project Zero.
