ArtBlast in the ELC Library Club: How Learning to See Differently Builds Creative Thinkers
What happens when young children are encouraged to see the world through an artist's eyes?
Sometimes, a simple change in perspective can unlock a lifetime of curiosity.
That was the focus of a recent ArtBlast session in the ELC Library Club, where our Prep and Year 1 students explored the building blocks of visual thinking through a hands-on workshop led by Senior Art Teacher Peter Horacek and Primary Art Teacher Lauren Scott.
The experience demonstrated how art education at Bialik College extends well beyond drawing. It encourages students to observe carefully, think creatively and approach challenges from new angles.
Learning from specialist teachers
Students were guided by Senior Art Teacher Peter Horacek, who also leads Library Learning and Educational Resources, alongside Primary Art Teacher Lauren Scott.
Together, they introduced students to concepts including structure, perspective, angles and shapes through engaging, age-appropriate activities. Rather than focusing on creating the "perfect" artwork, students were encouraged to experiment, ask questions and discover different ways of representing the world around them.
Learning directly from specialist educators gives young students access to deep subject knowledge while fostering confidence to explore new ideas.
Why is art important in the early years?
Creative experiences play an essential role in early childhood education.
Research consistently shows that visual arts support the development of observation, problem-solving, communication and critical thinking skills. They also encourage resilience as students learn that there is often more than one way to approach a challenge.
For young learners, art provides opportunities to:

Experiences such as ArtBlast allow students to connect with passionate educators from across the College while discovering that learning can happen in many different ways and spaces. The ELC Library Club became a place where art, curiosity and exploration came together, reminding students that great ideas often begin by simply looking more closely.
By introducing specialist learning experiences from the earliest years, we help students build the confidence to ask questions, embrace new perspectives and develop the creative thinking skills that will support them throughout their education.
Sometimes, all it takes is a pencil, a piece of paper and an invitation to see the world differently.
