Beyond Dollars and Cents: Bialik Primary Students Explore Financial Literacy
What does it mean to be smart with money? And how do we help children develop the skills to make confident financial decisions?
From 10–14 August, Bialik College Primary students explored these important questions during Financial Literacy Week, a week of hands-on learning designed to build financial understanding, critical thinking and practical life skills.
Throughout the week, students discovered that financial literacy is about much more than counting money. It's about understanding where money comes from, recognising the different ways people earn it, and learning to make thoughtful decisions about spending, saving and giving.
Bringing Financial Mathematics to Life
Each day, classroom teachers guided students through dedicated Financial Mathematics lessons, connecting mathematical concepts with everyday financial situations.
Learning extended beyond the classroom through lunchtime money-themed games and interactive financial literacy incursions, giving students opportunities to engage with financial concepts in different ways.
These experiences encouraged students to ask questions, think critically and consider how the choices we make with money can influence our lives and the lives of others.
Building Skills for Life
Financial literacy is an important part of preparing young people for the future. By introducing these concepts during the Primary years, Bialik College helps students build a foundation for understanding money and making informed financial decisions.
The week's activities also reinforced the importance of responsible decision-making, problem-solving and generosity, encouraging students to consider not only how money is earned and managed, but also how it can be used to help others.
Because learning about money isn't just about dollars and cents. It's about developing the knowledge, confidence and judgement to make choices that matter.
