Bialik College Goes to Morocco

Thursday, 20 Apr 2023

Bialik College, Australia’s uniquely inclusive pluralistic Jewish school, is leading a world first again, this time sending an entire year level to Morocco.

As part of the school’s Chavayah program, in which students spend a month in Israel, engaging with its history, culture, Jewish heritage and statehood, and multi faith inhabitants, students will visit Morocco beforehand.

With over one million Jews worldwide of Moroccan descent, Morocco sits at the centre of the Sephardic Jewish world, the half of world Jewry that descends from north African and Middle Eastern lands.

The pioneering visit will involve engaging with the contemporary Jewish community in Morocco, exploring the country’s incredible Jewish past, researching Arab-Israeli dialogue, and learning from our Muslim cousins in this case-study of peaceful coexistence.

Principal Jeremy Stowe-Lindner said, “Already world-renowned for our Culture of Thinking, Bialik led the Jewish world sending a year level each year to China prior to the pandemic, supporting our mission to graduate Global Jewish Australians. Morocco is the next stage in our journey as our students prepare to engage with this case study in Muslim-Jewish co-existence before arriving in Israel.”

Her Excellency Wassane Zailachi said, "Salaam Aleikum and Shalom to all. The Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Australia extends warm wishes to the Bialik College community prior to their unprecedented visit to Morocco. We welcome you to our country, for a trip that is a first for Australia, and the Asia-Pacific region."
