From Ideas to Impact: How Our Students Are Learning to Solve Real-World Problems
What does it take to turn an idea into a solution that could make a real difference?
For a group of Year 8 and 9 students at Bialik College, the answer wasn't simply creativity. It was curiosity, research, resilience and the confidence to test ideas, learn from feedback and keep improving.
Over 10 weeks, students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh elective completed the Innovating for Sustainable Cities program, an immersive innovation experience delivered in partnership with HEX. Anchored in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, the program challenged students to think beyond the classroom and develop practical solutions to real issues affecting cities and communities.
Learning Through Real-World Innovation
Rather than being given a problem to solve, students began by identifying one themselves.
They explored challenges within their communities through observation, research and interviews, learning that meaningful innovation starts with understanding people and their needs, not making assumptions.
Working in pairs, students progressed through a genuine innovation process that included:
- identifying and researching a real problem
- testing assumptions with evidence
- generating and refining ideas
- developing a Business Model Canvas
- creating prototypes using AI tools
- refining their thinking through mentoring and feedback
- preparing a three-minute venture-style pitch.
Each stage built on the last, encouraging students to think critically, collaborate effectively and embrace feedback as part of the learning process.
A Showcase of Growth
The program concluded with the Innovating for Sustainable Cities Pitch Afternoon, where six teams presented their ideas to an audience of parents, visiting educators and a judging panel that included Bialik College Principal Jeremy Stowe alongside the HEX facilitation team.
Each presentation explained the problem students had identified, the solution they had developed, who it was designed to help and why it mattered.
While the polished presentations were impressive, the real achievement was the journey that led there.
Across 10 weeks, students developed the confidence to communicate complex ideas, the resilience to refine their thinking through feedback and the entrepreneurial mindset needed to approach challenges with curiosity and purpose.
More Than a Duke of Edinburgh Elective
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is well known for encouraging young people to build skills, resilience and independence.
This elective extends those goals by providing students with authentic experiences that mirror the way innovators, entrepreneurs and changemakers work in the real world.
Students didn't simply complete a project. They learned how to identify opportunities, evaluate evidence, collaborate with others and develop solutions that have the potential to create meaningful impact.
These are the kinds of capabilities that will serve them throughout school, university and future careers.
Continuing the Journey
For students inspired to continue developing their innovation and entrepreneurship skills, Bialik College offers the opportunity to participate in the HEX High Accelerator program during Years 10 to 12.
The program enables students to work alongside industry mentors, build future-focused capabilities and gain formal university academic credit from the University of Sydney, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
