Sydney Swans Hall of Famer Tony Morwood Shares Leadership Lessons with Year 9 Students
Leadership is often associated with success, confidence and achievement. However, as Sydney Swans Hall of Fame member Tony Morwood recently shared with Bialik College Year 9 students, some of the most valuable leadership lessons come from navigating challenges and setbacks.
As part of the Year 9 Leadership Duke of Edinburgh elective, students had the opportunity to hear from Tony, whose distinguished AFL career saw him play 229 games for the Sydney Swans, become the club's leading goal kicker twice and earn a place in the Sydney Swans Team of the Century. Following his playing career, Tony continued to make a significant impact through senior administrative and community-focused roles within the organisation.
Drawing on his experiences both on and off the field, Tony spoke candidly about leadership, resilience and the importance of maintaining perspective during difficult times. His insights gave students a deeper understanding of what leadership looks like beyond titles and achievements.
One message in particular resonated strongly with students: "You lose confidence in your ability, but you don't lose your ability." Through personal stories and reflections, Tony highlighted how confidence can fluctuate while skills, knowledge and potential remain. His experiences demonstrated that leadership is not defined by avoiding setbacks, but by learning how to respond to them.
The session provided students with a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. Hearing directly from a respected sporting and community leader encouraged students to reflect on their own leadership journeys and consider how resilience, self-awareness and perseverance contribute to effective leadership.
Experiences such as this are an important part of Bialik College's approach to developing student leadership. By providing opportunities for autonomy, reflection and engagement with accomplished leaders, students gain practical insights that help prepare them for future challenges and opportunities.
Bialik College thanks Karen Glanc for organising this valuable session and helping create another meaningful learning experience for students.
