What Does Government Actually Do? Year 5 Students Explore Democracy in Action
How does a law get made? Who represents our local community? And what does leadership look like beyond the classroom?
These were just some of the questions explored when Bialik College's Year 5 students welcomed John Pesutto MP, Member for Hawthorn, for an engaging conversation about government, leadership and public service.
Rather than learning about democracy solely from a textbook, students had the opportunity to hear firsthand how Australia's system of government operates and how elected representatives work with their communities to make decisions and solve problems.
Bringing Civics to Life
Understanding government is an important part of every young person's education. Learning how decisions are made, why respectful debate matters and how citizens contribute to their communities helps students develop the knowledge and confidence to participate thoughtfully in society.
During the session, students explored topics including:
- how different levels of government work together
- the role of an elected representative
- why leadership involves listening, collaboration and responsibility
- how ideas become action through democratic processes.
The discussion encouraged students to ask thoughtful questions and consider how leadership can take many different forms.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
At Bialik College, we believe some of the most memorable learning happens when students connect classroom concepts with real-world experiences.
Meeting leaders from a range of professions and sectors helps students understand that learning has practical application. Whether engaging with scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, educators or public servants, these experiences encourage curiosity, critical thinking and informed citizenship.
By hearing directly from people serving their communities, students gain a deeper appreciation of the many ways individuals can contribute to society.
Developing Future Leaders
Leadership is not simply about holding a position of responsibility. It is about integrity, empathy, collaboration and the willingness to make a positive contribution.
These qualities are nurtured throughout a Bialik education. Opportunities to engage with community leaders, ask meaningful questions and think critically about complex issues help students build the confidence and capability to become thoughtful, informed and engaged citizens.
