Year 6 Students Bring Jewish Learning to Life Through Storytelling

How do you explain a complex Jewish value to a seven-year-old? At Bialik College, our Year 6 students discovered that sometimes the best answer is through a story.

As part of their Jewish Studies learning, Year 6 students recently became authors, illustrators and teachers, creating original children’s books to help younger students explore an important Jewish value.

Learning about Tza’ar Ba’alei Chayim

Over two weeks, Year 6 students explored Tza’ar Ba’alei Chayim, the Jewish principle of treating animals with kindness and dignity.

Their challenge was to take this thoughtful concept and make it meaningful and accessible for Year 2 students.

Working creatively, students wrote and illustrated their own children’s books, transforming their Jewish learning into engaging, child-friendly stories. The project encouraged them to think deeply about the value, consider how it can be expressed in everyday life and communicate their understanding to a younger audience.

When students become teachers

Once their books were complete, the Year 6 students shared them with a Year 2 class.

Reading their stories aloud gave the older students an opportunity to step into the role of teacher, explaining the Jewish values behind their stories and answering questions from their younger peers.

For Year 2, it was a chance to experience Jewish learning through stories created especially for them. For Year 6, teaching the concept to someone else helped reinforce their own understanding while building confidence, communication skills and leadership.

Building connection across year levels

The experience was about more than creating books.

Bringing Year 6 and Year 2 students together created a wonderful sense of connection, pride and community. It demonstrated how Jewish education at Bialik College can move beyond the classroom, giving students opportunities to learn from one another and put Jewish values into practice.

Through creativity and storytelling, students explored kindness while experiencing another important lesson: knowledge becomes even more meaningful when it is shared.

It was inspiring to see Jewish learning come to life across year levels and to watch our older students proudly guide the next generation of learners.
