Family and friends were treated to an evening of laughter and lively performance recently as the Year 7 Drama students presented the first act of The Servant of Two Masters.

Throughout the semester, students immersed themselves in the vibrant world of Commedia dell’Arte, the classic Italian theatrical tradition renowned for its stock characters, physical comedy and sharp social satire. Drawing inspiration from this rich performance style, students developed and staged an original production filled with improvised antics, exaggerated characters and playful humour.

A highlight of the performance was the way students embraced the spirit of Commedia dell’Arte by cleverly turning the tables on authority figures. Their witty portrayal of servants outsmarting their masters drew amusing parallels to contemporary politics and showcased their growing confidence as performers.

The production was the result of a highly collaborative creative process. Students played an active role in shaping the script and direction of the performance, regularly providing constructive feedback to one another and refining their ideas as an ensemble. This approach encouraged creativity, teamwork and critical thinking while giving students genuine ownership of their work.

Performing in this unique comic style provided valuable opportunities for students to develop their acting skills and build confidence on stage. The authentic learning experience was further enhanced by a question and answer session with the audience following the performance, allowing students to reflect on their creative choices and engage directly with their community.

The evening was a wonderful celebration of student learning, creativity and collaboration, highlighting the rich opportunities available through the Year 7 Drama program.
