You Never Know Who You’ll Meet: A Bialik Story from a Poland Shule

You Never Know Who You’ll Meet at a Poland Shule

It happened in a quiet corner of the world, far from Melbourne and far from home. Yet somehow, it felt deeply familiar.

During the school holidays in Poland, Jeremy walked into a small Friday night service in Łódź with his family. The Jewish community there is tiny, around 100 people, including Ukrainian refugees rebuilding their lives. It is not the kind of place where you expect a connection to home.

Yet that is exactly what happened.

When Jewish Identity Travels With You

For many parents searching for a Jewish school in Melbourne, there is an underlying question just beneath the surface:

Will my child stay connected to their identity, their values and their community long after they leave school?

It is a real concern. In a fast-moving, global world, identity can feel fragile and community can feel distant.

It does not have to be that way.

A Bialik Connection Thousands of Kilometres Away

Arriving early to the service, Jeremy struck up a conversation with a man named Yaakov.

Within moments, something shifted.

Recognition.

Yaakov, formerly James, was a member of Bialik’s Class of 2017. He had just recognised his former Principal.

Today, he lives in Łódź and has embraced a Chassidic lifestyle. He plays an active role in supporting the local Jewish community, helping run the shule, maintaining the cemetery and supporting fellow Jews, including refugees, as they rebuild their lives.

In a place where Jewish continuity depends on individuals stepping forward, Yaakov has become one of those people.

In that moment, thousands of kilometres from Melbourne, Prinicpal and student were reunited in a shared commitment to Jewish life.

More Than Education, A Lifelong Sense of Purpose

This is not just a story about coincidence.

It is a story about what happens when a Jewish education goes beyond academics.

At Bialik, students carry something with them:

A deep connection to Jewish values and identity
A sense of responsibility to community wherever they are
The confidence to step into leadership in unexpected places

Whether families are searching for a Jewish primary school with strong foundations or a secondary school that combines academic excellence with Jewish values and identity, the goal remains the same.

To shape young people who show up.

Even in Łódź. Even years later.

Proof That Stays With You

Moments like this cannot be planned.

A quiet shule. A small community. A simple conversation.

Then the realisation that the Bialik connection is still there.

Alive, active and global.

It lives in the graduate who becomes a pillar of a small European Jewish community.

It lives in the Principal who witnesses the enduring impact of education.

It lives in the understanding that what begins in Melbourne does not stay in Melbourne.

Wherever You Go, It Comes With You

You never know who you will meet.

If you are part of the Bialik community, you are never far from home.

A strong Jewish education does more than prepare students for exams.

It prepares them for life, for leadership and for connection wherever their journey takes them.
