From Readers to Writers: Bialik Students Attend Melbourne Writers Festival

Student News Monday, 01 June 2026

What happens when passionate young readers and writers step beyond the classroom and into a world filled with authors, storytellers and creative thinkers?

Recently, selected students from Years 4, 7, 9 and 10 attended events as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival, immersing themselves in conversations about writing, publishing, creativity and the power of storytelling.

Throughout the day, students heard from an inspiring line-up of speakers who shared their experiences as writers, performers, advocates and creatives. Through these sessions, students gained insight into the realities of the creative process and the many pathways that can lead to a career in storytelling.

Rather than presenting writing as a polished or effortless pursuit, speakers spoke candidly about challenges, setbacks and the often messy process of developing ideas. Students gained a behind-the-scenes understanding of what it takes to transform a spark of inspiration into a finished piece of work.

For many attendees, the experience was a powerful reminder that writing extends far beyond the classroom. It is a way of exploring ideas, expressing identity, building empathy and connecting with others. Hearing directly from published authors and creative professionals helped students see that every writer's journey begins somewhere, often with a young person filling notebooks, experimenting with stories and finding their voice.

Experiences such as the Melbourne Writers Festival play an important role in nurturing curiosity and creativity. They encourage students to engage with literature not only as readers but also as future storytellers.

We thank the staff members who accompanied students on this inspiring excursion and helped make the experience possible.
