Visual Arts at Bialik: Building Creative Confidence from Primary to Senior School

Student News Thursday, 16 Apr 2026

What does it look like when creativity is taken seriously from Year 2 through to Year 12?

In many schools, visual arts can feel like an “extra.” Something nice, but not essential. Yet for parents looking for a Melbourne school that nurtures creative thinking alongside academic excellence, this gap matters.

At Bialik, Visual Arts is not an add-on. It is a pathway for students to build confidence, identity and creative voice.

Term 1 has seen strong engagement across the Visual Arts program, with students across all year levels exploring a wide range of mediums, techniques and ideas. From early primary through to senior school, the focus is not just on creating art, but on developing thoughtful, capable and expressive young people.

That growth is already being recognised beyond the classroom.

One of our Year 12 students has been shortlisted for the Lester Prize Youth Awards 2026, one of Australia’s most respected portraiture prizes. For a student artist, this is not just an achievement. It is a moment of validation that their ideas, skill and perspective have real impact.

Across the school, that same journey is unfolding in different ways.

In Year 2, students are creating vibrant animal collages inspired by Australian artist Pete Cromer, learning how colour, pattern and composition tell a story. In Year 5, students are shaping terracotta warriors, developing technical skill while connecting with history and culture. By Year 8, identity photography invites students to explore who they are and how they see the world, building both artistic and personal confidence.

Each project is different. The outcome is the same. Students who are willing to take creative risks, think independently and express themselves with clarity.

As the year progresses, this work will continue to develop towards the mid-year exhibition and future external opportunities, giving students the chance to share their work with the wider community.

Because at its core, Visual Arts at Bialik is about more than technique.

It is about helping students see themselves as creative, confident thinkers, ready to contribute their ideas to the world.
